Falling objects has been a challenge from day one in the oil and gas industry and a lot has been done to reduce such incidents. However, according to the RNNP report the number of injuries related to falling objects has remained relatively stable in the period from 2002 to 2014. In average, we experience 8 personal injuries per year on the Norwegian shelf. Almost half of the incidents are caused by human activity.
To create awareness on how such accidents can be avoided, Songa Offshore launched an extensive campaign on all their rigs.
“The campaign had three parts and was headed off on safety meeting where the employees were discussing what works well and what could be improved,” says QHSE manager Rune With. “In addition, all employees had the opportunity to share their views through a survey.
Mintra Group produced campaign materials and a film that was shown at the start of the HSE meetings to initiate discussion. The survey was run through Trainingportal.
“It was important for us to involve everyone and to avoid a top-down approach. The team at Mintra and the tools we already have on the Trainingportal really contributed to achieving involvement; 95% think that the campaign was valuable.”
Mintra Group has for several years been working with industry to reduce incidents involving falling objects. We have also developed a training package for prevention of falling objects for the Norwegian Oil Industry Association, and several security films for Samarbeid for Sikkerhet.
On Trainingportal we offer off-the-shelf-courses on falling objects from two suppliers:
